The release of Kyogre quickly overshadowed the announcement of the monthly Community Day events. But while Kyogre may just be another Legendary Raid Boss, the Community Day events have some great potential.
PLAYER MEET-UPS: The Community Day events are clearly Niantic's way of compensating people for not being able to give special effects to every fan event. Although, Niantic should absolutely give us the announcement farther in advance than one week ahead.
EVENT-ONLY MOVES: Similarly to how Pikachu could learn Present during the 2017 Holiday Event, a special Pokémon will have an exclusive move and increased spawn rates during the Community Event. This month's special Pokémon is Pikachu with Surf, which is a nod to the main-series games.
January's featured Pokémon is not very meta-relavent, but future ones could be. Pokémon that have been shut out of relevancy because of terrible movepool could finally become usable. Niantic could even go a step further and add moves that can only be learned during an event. These moves could be new moves, such as Fairy Wind, Liquidation, Parabolic Charge, and Horn Leech. The competitive possibility of event-exclusive moves is great!
SHINY POKÉMON: Niantic has been stingy about Shiny Pokémon in the past, but they've been on a roll since the introduction of Generation 3. The Magikarp, Pikachu, Sableye, Shuppet, Duskull, Snorunt, Absol, and Mawile families all have their Shiny variants released. In addition, many other Pokémon have had their Shiny sprites or models discovered by dataminers on Niantic's servers.
With the spotlight being on one Pokémon or family during the hours of the event, it would be great to see that Pokémon get its Shiny variant released. And, looking ahead, a Shiny Pokémon with an event-exclusive move would have great trading value one day.
