Research tasks (quests) have been added to Pokémon GO! Field Research tasks are simple tasks that are available by spinning PokéStops. By completing at least one each day, you'll earn a Stamp. Once you earn seven Stamps, you'll have a Research Breakthrough, which gives you an encounter with a Legendary Pokémon (Moltres is the only known possibility).
Special Research is a task directly from Professor Willow. After completing a series of difficult tasks, you'll be able to catch the Mythical Pokémon Mew. After completing the Mythical Discovery, there is not another Special Research task (at least, there won't be until Niantic programs another). SOURCE: Niantic, Community Reports
