In the past several hours, some big news has come out of an announcement by Niantic and the datamine of a new update. Let's dive in!
RESEARCH BREAKTHROUGH: Not long after people began reporting this week's Research Breakthrough encounter (which is still Moltres), Niantic announced that we'll soon be seeing a change in research. Field Research tasks will go from Fire-themed to Electric- and Flying-themed, and Zapdos will become the Legendary Pokémon coming from Research Breakthroughs. This change goes into effect on May 1 at 1:00 P.M. PDT.
A NEW UPDATE: A new version of Pokémon GO has begun its distribution. Version 0.101.0 brings some hints at some future updates:
SITE UPDATE: Before you go, we want to provide you with some updates about the site. We had some schedule conflicts yesterday, which is why this article had to go up a few hours late. We have future schedule conflicts over the weekend and the beginning of next week. Articles will still come next week, but Weekend Download may be published at an irregular time.
Thanks for reading, Trainers. Assuming we have no more breaking news, our Empoleon preview will go up tomorrow.

A NEW UPDATE: A new version of Pokémon GO has begun its distribution. Version 0.101.0 brings some hints at some future updates:
- NEW SEARCH FEATURE: Prior to this update, searching for the term "Legendary" in the search bar would also pull up the Mythical Pokémon Mew. Searching "Mythical" would pull up nothing. But no longer! Mew, plus any future Mythical Pokémon added, will now appear when searching for "Mythical" instead of "Legendary."
- NEW RESEARCH TASKS: New code for some research tasks has appeared. This follows the announcement of new, "skill-based" research tasks by Niantic. We'll have to see what comes of this next week.
- SPECIAL GRAPHIC: As of late, Niantic has been adding a special gift box for Community Days. It has been using the Special Box graphic, but Niantic has now added a new, unique box image for it.
- A NEW MOVE: Niantic has added one new move. The move is a Rock-type Fast Attack: Smack Down. It has been assigned to no Pokémon yet, so we'll have to wait and see what Pokémon get this move in the future.
- SUBMISSION FEATURES: Trainers are now able report when the weather seems faulty. Additionally, more code has been added to the PokéStop submission feature. It still isn't live, but Niantic is clearly working hard on it.
