Last month Niantic's Chief Marketing Officer, Mike Quigley, spoke at the The Next Web conference in the Netherlands. The footage of Quigley's speech was recently put on YouTube and highlighted by Pokémon GO Hub in an article. The audience asked Quigley what the next feature was going to be for Pokémon GO and he said the following:
You know, the gym mechanic is something in Pokémon GO which we really, really want to improve, so that’s gonna be the next big area for us.
The capture mechanic is fun, but you’re a lone wolf, you’re going out there on your own. Maybe you’re with friends, but there’s not that, kind of, connected experience. We think there is an opportunity for collaboration in that area, but more to come on that.
That last line is very interesting. Collaborative capturing would refer to all the Trainers in an area working together to capture the same Pokémon. Sound familiar? This feature seems to reference the original trailer for Pokémon GO in which hundreds of Trainers worked together to capture Mewtwo in Times Square. Now, Niantic has since said in other statements (think "This summer will be legendary") that Legendary Pokémon will be coming out this summer, but it still points to how Niantic plans to deal with Legendary Pokémon and their events.
In the beginning of the statement, Quigley also reaffirmed that the Gym system rework will be the next major update, no matter how behind Niantic seems to be on that feature. As said in a previous article, for Niantic to stick with the quarterly update system they announced for 2017, they must release the new Gym system this month. And to put any speculation to rest about the Hoenn Region (Generation 3) Pokémon to come before the rework, no new species of Pokémon have appeared in the game's code, while code for a raid system has.
No matter what happens, some great, major updates will becoming this summer. After all, "this summer will be legendary."
Happy hunting, Trainers.
