pokemon go fest Chicago: worldwide event details
Niantic promised weeks ago that both Trainers attending GO Fest and those who are not will be able to participate in the event in some way. We now know how this will be done.
IN THE PARK: Six Pokémon Types (Normal, Grass, Rock, Fire, Water, and Electric) will unlock a global, in-game event. Whatever Type is caught most in Grant Park determines the award. The amount of the Type (as determined by bronze, silver, and gold tiers) will determine the extent of the award. Corresponding Type-awards are listed below.
Fire: Increased Candy
Water: Increased XP
Rock: Buddy Distance Bonus
Grass: Increased Stardust
Electric: Lowered Egg Distances
Normal: Encounter-Rate Bonus
OUTSIDE THE PARK AND AROUND THE WORLD: Meanwhile, those Trainers beyond the boundaries of the park need to go on a capturing spree. If enough Pokémon are captured (again determined in three tiers) a bonus reward will be granted. The three tiers of award are listed below.
Bronze: The Type-bonus will be extended by one day (24 hours)
Silver: The Type-bonus will be extended by two days (48 hours)
Gold: Unlocks a Mystery Challenge
THE MYSTERY CHALLENGE: If the Mystery Challenge is completed by the event-attendees, a "major global reward" will be unlocked for the next two days (July 23 and 24).

bonus story: legendary blog post leaked
Ali-A is one of the most-followed gaming YouTubers out there, and he published an interesting Pokémon GO video on his second channel yesterday. In addition to covering the new Egg changes, Ali read a leaked blog post referring the soon-to-be-released Legendary Pokémon. We have no official confirmation of this post at this time and PNN cannot speak of the credibility of this post, although it is worth sharing.
LEGENDARIES: The leak claims that Legendary Raids will debut at GO Fest, beginning at 1:00 P.M. (PT). The post also says that both generations of Legendaries will be released. Legendary raids will allegedly go global after the event.
NEW ITEMS: The leak claims that new items will also be released with Legendaries. Wepar Berries will double Stardust and be available from regular PokéStops. Golden Pinap Berries will greatly increase Candy awards beyond that of a regular Pinap Berry. This new deluxe Berry will drop from Raids. Excitingly, Master Balls will also come. They will drop from Raids, although at a rate far lower than TMs. No word was given if these new PokéBalls will be allowed to be used to capture Legendary Raid Bosses, although it seems likely. The leak also claimed that more new items will also be released (which could include Golden Nanab Berries, Legendary Raid Passes, and Bluk Berries). We may need another increase to bag space!
THE SQUIRTLE SQUAD: Another anime-costume-wearing Pokémon may be spawning soon! The iconic Squirtle Squad from the Pokémon television show are a group of firefighting and sunglasses-wearing Squirtle. They will keep on their costume forever, and Wartortle and Blastoise will likely also have these sharp-looking shades if evolved to. It's good to see that Niantic is allegedly considering giving costumes to Pokémon beyond the Pikachu family.
A NEW FEATURE FOR THE APPRAISAL SYSTEM: After using the in-game IV appraisal, Trainers will now be able to mark each Pokémon with a green or red mark to clarify which have good IVs and which do not.
