Trainers, EX Raids are scheduled to begin as early as tomorrow, September 6! These invite-only Raids are still shrouded in mystery, so what can you do to prepare?
PREPARING: Save up Golden Razz Berries! For now, use Golden Razzes only on Pokédex additions (for example, Mewtwo), 95% - 100% IV Raid Bosses (check the Raid Boss Chart for the perfect CPs), and very rare spawns (for example, Dragonite). With Golden Razz Berries now being awarded far less, prioritizing usage is key. (Thanks to Reversal for the Golden Razz tips).
Second, always have a Raid Pass on hand. Since we don't know if Exclusive Raid Passes will be awarded, having a free or Premium Pass saved up is never a bad idea.
Third, save up some Rare Candy, TMs, and Stardust. We do not know for full certainty what Pokémon will be released, so having good counters is key. (See counters below).
- MEWTWO: Gyarados (Bite / Crunch), Umbreon (Snarl / Foul Play), Scizor (Fury Cutter / X-Scissor)
- HO-OH: Golem (Rock Throw / Stone Edge), Vaporeon (Water Gun / Hydro Pump), Suicune (Hidden Power / Hydro Pump)
- MEW: The same as Mewtwo (Bug-type, Ghost-type, and Dark-type attacks)
- CELEBI: Scizor (Fury Cutter / X-Scissor), Entei & Moltres (Fire Spin / Overheat), Houndoom (any moveset)
WHAT WILL BE AVAILABLE IN EX RAIDS: Niantic has said that Mewtwo would be available in these special Raids, but they did not even mention it when they announced the field test. This could mean that Mewtwo won't be available right away, but you never know with Niantic. Mew and Celebi could be on the table, but they seem less likely since they're Mythical Pokémon. Ho-Oh is the only other Legendary that makes sense to be available (as it is the trio-master of the Legendary Beast, who are currently available).
WHO WILL GET ACCESS TO EX RAIDS: With regular Raids, high-level Trainers could participate in Raids at sponsored Gyms. Niantic gradually lowered the level-minimum over the next few days. Except for the sponsored Gyms portion of this requirement, we don't see any reason why Niantic will not do this again. If it isn't the system we saw before, the only other option seems like it will be total randomness.
Niantic certainly likes mystery, Trainers, so we'll just have to see what is going to happen tomorrow (should they launch, after all they said, "as early as"). Good luck with your Legendary Beast Raids (only 25 days until they migrate)!
