updated: when will gen 3 released?

Two weeks ago PNN published an article stating our prediction, as well as many differing ones, on the release time of Generation 3 in Pokémon GO. Well, some things have happened since then, so let's see if our theory still holds relevance.

First off, we stand by the theory that Gen 3 will be released before the end of the month, but we are extending the expectation to the end of October. Even though we have the Legendary Beast events spanning over the next three months, the game needs something else to stoke the fires of hype. The Beasts will rekindle the hype for the first few days after their migration at the end of the month, but it will then die down again. Leaving us with just these three special Raid Bosses for the next three months is a bad idea on Niantic's part, and one they seem to have learned they cannot do after the post-Holiday 2016 season.

Mewtwo could bring back a bit of excitement, but the slow release has really hurt the potential for the hype. It's slow and confusing rollout (and the lack of EX Raid testing over the past few days) has really eliminated the possibility of a big get-back-into-the-game moment.

Releasing other Legendaries (Ho-Oh, Mew, and Celebi) would make more headlines, but Legendaries have really run their course at this point. Releasing the Legendary Beasts immediately after Lugia and the Legendary Birds and making Raid Eggs return has really seem to sour the Raiding experience and the excitement over Legendaries. Even releasing Smeargle and Delibird wouldn't keep us going for very long, and certainly no where near as long as Ditto did.

So what can Niantic do? Honestly, releasing Generation 3 soon (towards the very beginning of the Northern Hemisphere's fall) is their best course. Generation 3 is many people's favorite generation, and it would certainly bring much excitement back to past, present, and future Trainers. Generation 3 would definitely keep us going through the North's winter and the South's summer.

Again, Pokémon GO really needs this right now. Raiding the Beasts for three months will become, and has started to become, monotonous. Since we cannot predict any other major 2017 update (trading, player-versus-player battles, breeding, etc.) with any certainty, Generation 3 is a definite for the year.

We have entered a time that is most analogous to the time before Gen 2 (although not so severe). Niantic is barely tweeting, not much is going on in-game, and we are (almost) overdue for some major update. Niantic seems to sense this, and needs to send out more EX Raid Passes (which they did overnight, but more on that later on today), release a new Legendary, give us an in-game event beyond Legendaries, or give us a Gen 3 Legendary / baby preview with a promised release date for the rest of the Generation (which has been "leaked" lately, but nothing credible has come of it).

Those are are revised thoughts on Gen 3's release, Trainers. Again, we expect it to come out slightly later than originally predicted, but the Legendary Beasts do not change the fact that we expect it will be released very soon.
