The Equinox Event is certainly going to be one of the biggest and most popular events with its double Stardust. But most of its features seem to suggest, but not confirm, that Generation 3 or some other major update will come afterwards.
Firstly, all major updates that we have gotten so far this year have been preceded by an in-game event. Generation 2 came after the Valentine's Day Event and the gym rework and Raids came after the Solstice Event. Both of these events allowed for a variety of rare Pokémon for more rural players to add to their Pokédex (Porygon and Chansey, for example) or to encounter Pokémon that would have evolutions useful in Raids (Arcanine and Lapras, for example).
Secondly, the game was dying or beginning to loose excitement from it's last major update. Trainers were very bored in the gap between the Holiday Events and Generation 2, and Generation 2's hype had run dry shortly before the Raid launch. And, right now, we do have content, but many people have become bored with only Legendaries.
Thirdly, we still need the promised major update for this quarter of the year (which ends at the end of September). After the launch of Gen 2, Niantic revealed that there would be three more major updates in the three remaining quarters of the year. The first of which was Raids, which was followed by a series of Legendary Events. Remember, Niantic considers the Legendary Birds and Beasts as limited-time-only events and not a major update.
Fourthly, we will go over all of the effects of this event that could hint at Generation 3's release following the Equinox Event.
TRIPLE XP FOR NEW POKÉDEX ADDITIONS: This effect seems so random. Sure, the first Beast migration will occur during the event, allowing for greatly-increased XP for at least one addition to your Pokédex. Some people will also be receiving Mewtwo, bringing the total up to two. Most people have complete Pokédexes, too, except for regionals and those obscure Pokémon like Shuckle and Girafarig. This effect really seems pointless except for the release of some new Pokémon.
It could refer to Delibird and Smeargle, although that only adds two new additions. Mew, Celebi, and / or Ho-Oh would only add another three. This effect seems so Gen 3-ish that it couldn't be anything else. Having this effect for anything less than ten additions doesn't seem sensible.
SPECIAL 2KM EGGS: The special Eggs will contain rare Pokémon, ones that many people are missing in their Pokédex. Having Larvitar, Chansey, and Mareep confirmed for the event's Eggpool, and others like Lapras, Togepi, Aerodactyl, Tyrogue, and Girafarig, expected, it is clear that Niantic is trying to give us the opportunity to fill the current Pokédex the best we can.
The Valentine's Event featured rare Generation 1 Pokémon like Chansey, Porygon, and Clefable. Those Pokémon were the gaps in many people's Pokédex back then, and Pokémon like Ampharos, Blissey, and Tyranitar are the holes now. It's clear Niantic is trying to end Generation 2 on a high note, which the triple XP for Pokédex additions only further supports.
"NEW ADVENTURES": The official announcement for the Equinox Event specifically mentions "new adventures" at the end of the introduction. If new adventures don't mean the Equinox Event, followed by Generation 3, nothing else will. And now is the perfect, most fair, time for Generation 3's release. It's about the same time of year in the Southern Hemisphere as it was when Generation 2 was released up in the Northern Hemisphere.
We may be entering the Northern Hemisphere's cold seasons, but the South is just warming up. Southerners had to catch Johtonian Pokémon and battle Raid Bosses during fall and winter, so now it's the Northerners' turn. And for the people already complaining about the cold, the North's summer isn't officially over yet. Gen 3 needs to come out this year, and now is the best time.
We honestly think that some update, most likely Generation 3, is going to come out soon after or towards the latter part of the Equinox Event. The time is right, some of the code is here, and Niantic has hinted at it like no tomorrow with this event.
