Deoxys is an extraterrestrial Legendary Pokémon from Generation 3. As with every Pokémon from the Hoenn region, it is currently being prepared in the game's code. We saw this in the last update when Deoxys (as well as Castform) got support for its four different forms. But how would these different forms work in Pokémon GO?
Before we begin to speculate how Deoxys might work in Pokémon GO, lets look at how it works in other branches of the Pokémon franchise. Unlike Unown, Deoxys is able to toggle between its forms and is not locked into a specific one. In the main-series games, Deoxys changes form after coming into close proximity to a meteor. In Pokémon Duel, the four different forms are treated as separate figures and Pokémon. In the anime, Deoxys changes its form at will depending on if it needs a boost in attack, speed, or defense.
Being a Legendary, Deoxys will be available in EX Raid Battles. We theorize that all Deoxys will be in their Regular Form when capturing and battling them. Niantic could easily introduce a meteor Item that changes the form of a Deoxys, similarly to how a TM changes the Fast or Charged attack of a Pokémon. The meteor could be a Raid-exclusive reward or a rare PokéStop Item, like a Metal Coat or Dragon Scale.
It's Regular and Attack forms will be very widely used inside of Gyms and Raids. Its Defense form could be used offensively by the type of people that use Chansey, Blissey, Lugia, and Snorlax in Raids (please don't, people) to stall. Should Legendaries ever be allowed in Gyms, the Defense form would probably be one of the most common defenders. The Speed form is the only version that seems like it could be irrelevant. That could be fixed by it having ridiculously fast attacking animation, but that would need a battle system rework for that to probably happen.
We don't expect Deoxys to be released in 2017, be we are very excited to see how it will work in Pokémon GO. Deoxys will certainly have a place in the metagame, and we are very excited to figure out what that will be. Keep playing, Trainers, because Generation 3 is right around the corner!
