With 2017 now coming to a close, Pokémon GO has gone through over one year of adventure! In our final article of 2017, we'll be looking back at the biggest Pokémon GO stories of 2017.
NEW POKÉMON & RAIDS: A wide variety of new Pokémon were added in 2017. Starting with the Pokémon of the Johto Region, moving into Legendary Pokémon and Raids, and ending with about half of the Pokémon from the Hoenn Region. This has been our favorite addition to Pokémon GO, and we expect it to continue in 2018.
GO FEST: Pokémon GO Fest Chicago may have given us Legendary Pokédex additions, but it was definitely one of Niantic's biggest mess-ups. After widespread excitement from attendees, glitches and horrendous cell service plagued the day and poisoned the event's memory.
Even though our experience at GO Fest wasn't what we expected, we still enjoyed ourselves. It was amazing to see thousands of dedicated players come together in one park, even though it went way south. That said, it was great to see Niantic turn it around for the other real-world events.
EX RAIDS: The EX Raid system has, without a doubt, been Niantic's mistake. Despite what the system could have been, Niantic has mishandled it in such a way that could easily be beyond repair. After leaving us with an admittedly-random system for months, Niantic gave us a "fix" for the problem that clearly has not worked.
PARTING THOUGHTS: Even though Pokémon GO had some very low moments in 2017, we had some very high moments, too. The game almost died twice, and Niantic made some major mistakes, but it has survived. We are looking forward to 2018 and its major updates.
PNN will continue into the new year, especially now that the holiday-based obligations are behind us. As we have announced, we are working on an expansion to YouTube and have already expanded to Twitter (@PNN_APTV). This article will replace Weekend Download for this week. Thanks for reading, Trainers, and we'll see you in 2018!
